The Paystack Checkout Setup That Converts Every WhatsApp Buyer

The Paystack Checkout Setup That Converts Every WhatsApp Buyer

You did the hard part. The ad ran, the buyer clicked, the AI answered, the price was agreed. Then you dropped a Paystack link — and 3 out of every 10 buyers didn't complete the payment.

Payment drop-off in Nigeria has almost nothing to do with intent and almost everything to do with a mistuned checkout. Here is the exact Paystack setup we recommend across every Storefront merchant — the same one that pushed our platform-wide checkout-completion rate from 68% to 91% over 12 months.

1. Turn on every Nigerian payment method Paystack supports

Go to your Paystack dashboard → Settings → Payment Methods, and confirm all four are enabled: Card, Bank Transfer, USSD, and Bank (direct debit).

Roughly 40% of Nigerian buyers now prefer bank transfer over card at checkout — especially for orders above ₦20,000. If transfer is off, you're rejecting almost half of your buyers by default.

Storefront's payments integration mirrors these settings automatically so you don't have to reconfigure per order.

2. Enable saved cards (a.k.a. one-tap repeat orders)

Paystack supports card tokenisation. Once a buyer pays you once, subsequent checkouts skip card entry entirely — they see the last 4 digits and a Pay button. Repeat purchase completion jumps from ~70% to ~94%. Read Paystack's authorization guide for the API details; Storefront turns this on by default for every merchant on the Business plan.

3. Set your business category correctly

Sounds boring, matters a lot. Paystack surfaces different anti-fraud thresholds by category. A Retail category with a ₦25,000 average order will breeze through 3D Secure. A Digital Services category with the same order size will trigger extra verification, killing 15–20% of buyers who don't complete the OTP step.

If you sell physical goods, pick Retail. If you sell services, pick Services. Don't leave it on 'Other'.

4. Add pay-on-delivery as a fallback, not a default

About 25% of first-time Nigerian buyers still refuse to pay online — usually a trust issue, not a money issue. Offering pay on delivery after (not before) you've quoted online recovers those buyers without training your entire base to expect PoD.

Rule of thumb: online payment first, PoD offered only if they push back. Storefront's AI handles this negotiation for you.

5. Route payments into a dedicated business bank account

Never route Paystack settlements into your personal account. Two reasons: (a) it complicates tax filings and (b) Paystack has stricter risk-review rules for personal-linked accounts, which can freeze payouts for 48 hours during high-volume days.

Open a corporate account with Wema Alat, Kuda Business, Providus, or a traditional bank, and connect that to Paystack. Payouts land next business day (T+1) with no drama.

6. Use split settlement if you have partners

Selling with a co-founder? Have a supplier who takes a cut? Use Paystack's Split Payments — commissions are deducted automatically before settlement. No end-of-week reconciliation spreadsheets.

Storefront supports split settlement natively on Storefront Protect — the escrow product.

7. Enable transaction webhooks

This is the technical bit merchants skip and then wonder why order statuses are wrong. Paystack sends a webhook the instant a payment succeeds or fails. Without it, your dashboard shows 'awaiting payment' even after the buyer has paid — and you look confused when they message.

Storefront ships with pre-configured Paystack webhooks the moment you connect the integration. If you're building direct, follow Paystack's webhook docs.

8. Test with the ₦100 rule

Before you go live, send yourself a real ₦100 test link. Complete the payment. Confirm the receipt email arrives, the dashboard flips to 'paid', and your WhatsApp AI acknowledges the payment to the buyer. If any of those three steps fail, fix them before you spend a naira on ads.

The impact, quantified

Merchants who tune all eight settings raise their checkout completion rate by an average of 22 percentage points inside 30 days. On ₦2M/month of WhatsApp orders, that's ₦440,000/month of previously-lost revenue recovered — without a single extra ad click.
