AI Sales Assistants Explained: What They Do, What They Don't

AI is the biggest buzzword in Nigerian business right now. But most owners we speak to still ask the same three questions: 'Will this thing actually help me sell more? Is it going to embarrass me in front of my customers? And do I need to be technical to use it?' Fair questions. Here are the honest answers.

What a modern AI sales assistant actually does

Answers product questions instantly. Quotes accurate prices directly from your catalogue. Confirms availability and delivery timelines. Sends payment links. Handles the same repetitive 'how much?' 500 times a day without getting tired, rude, or slow. Speaks in your brand voice — including Nigerian English phrases and greetings you approve.

Under the hood, a well-built AI assistant does three things in every message: (1) it understands the intent behind what the buyer said, (2) it looks up the correct answer in your business data (products, prices, hours, delivery zones), and (3) it responds in natural language that sounds like a helpful human. Steps 2 and 3 are what separate a good AI from a chatbot script from 2019.

What it should NOT do (and Storefront blocks by default)

It should not invent prices you never set. It should not promise a delivery you cannot fulfil. It should not negotiate wholesale terms. It should not handle refund complaints or angry customers. It should not commit to custom products or bespoke work.

For all of these, Storefront tags the chat with 'needs human' and pings you via the app and email. Roughly 15% of chats need human handoff — the other 85% AI closes on its own.

Common fears, honestly addressed

'Customers will hate talking to a bot.' Data says otherwise. When we asked 3,400 Nigerian buyers who had transacted through Storefront-powered chats, 78% said they preferred instant replies over waiting for a human — even if they knew the reply was AI-assisted. Speed beats warmth in transactional messaging.

'It will make embarrassing mistakes.' It can, if you skip setup. The single most important thing you do is upload a clean product catalogue with real prices, clear names, and short descriptions. AI cannot invent good answers from bad data. With clean data, error rates drop below 2%.

'It will replace my staff.' In practice, it replaces your late-night self. Merchants who add AI typically don't fire anyone — they redeploy their sales staff from answering 'how much?' 400 times a day to actually closing complex orders and building customer relationships. Same team, 3–4x the throughput.

The setup that matters most: your catalogue

AI is only as good as the data behind it. Upload your products with:

Clean names — 'Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds — Black' beats 'earpiece'.

Real prices — not 'DM for price', not '₦0'.

Short descriptions — 3 to 5 sentences about what it does and who it's for.

Delivery info — which cities/areas, how long, how much.

Photos — clear, well-lit, at least one per product.

Once that's done, everything else is automatic. Storefront also lets you import from Shopify, WooCommerce, or a CSV in under 5 minutes if you already have a store.

Should you tell customers it's an AI?

Our recommendation: give it a friendly first name ('Ada', 'Tunde', 'Aisha') and let it introduce itself naturally as your assistant. Something like: 'Hi, I'm Ada from {Business Name}. How can I help you today?' You don't need to hide that it's an AI, but you also don't need to lead with it. Most Nigerian customers do not care — they just want fast, accurate answers.

The one place to be transparent: if a buyer explicitly asks 'am I talking to a person or a robot?', have your AI reply honestly. Storefront's default answer is: 'I'm Ada, an AI assistant. My colleague {Owner Name} handles anything I can't. Do you want me to loop them in?' Buyers respect the honesty.

How to know if AI is working

Track three numbers in your first 30 days:

Response time. Should drop from hours to seconds. This alone lifts sales.

Chats-to-orders conversion rate. Should climb 15–40%. If it doesn't, something in your welcome message or catalogue needs tweaking.

Human handoff rate. Should sit between 10% and 20%. Lower than 10% means AI is overreaching (probably making things up); higher than 25% means it needs more training data or product info.

Bottom line

AI is not replacing you. It is replacing the 3am 'how much?' messages that make you dread opening WhatsApp. It is replacing the 45 minutes you spend every morning catching up on overnight chats. It is replacing the sales you never even knew you lost.

That trade is worth it — for you, for your customers, and for your bank balance.
